Section outing 2011!

Hello my loves!

So because everyone couldn't make it on Friday the 13th, a very auspicious date, we're changing the section outing to a better time!

Unfortunately, our dear Sheryl will be overseas in the next two weeks because she will be in the US of A and we will be stuck doing strange sabbaticals while the seniors will be studying, and therefore! Therefore therefore therefore, we will postpone our section outing to somewhere in the June holidays, preferably a day where everyone is free, starting from the lonely batch '09 all the way down to batch '14!

Any ideas for where we want to go? Siewrong wants to fly kites and stuff so we're thinking picnic @ Marina Barrage, for now, but after that if anyone has any ideas for where we want to go, SUGGEST.

Also, tell us which week you're most free in! :3 or the week where you'll be free enough for section outings anyway.

went back few days ago...welcome new sec 1s! start your journey in band with the right attitude and it will be a fun experience! listen to your old and wise seniors :P and you can learn a lot! and be nice to the instruments. and librarians (siewrong jiaxin JIAYOU :PPP).

jiayou for band! just focus on whatever the set piece is and robert sheldon's cheoreography thingy :D i'm sure our section is up to the standards required by the piece, just needs practice and encouragement! esp. practicing more as a section to make sure everything clicks nicely so ms chong don't need to correct small mistakes during main band :D jiayous!

Hey!
Finally dug out the password from somewhere and managed to log in.

Okay guys! :D Good luck for SIBF, let's really shine on stage and forget about embarassment and shyness okay! It's less than ten minutes on the RP stage, so let's really play our hearts out, play our best and remind the judges (if they forgot xD) that we're a platinum band!

Yeah. It's hard to relax and play properly when so much depends on it being perfect, but don't ever panic and remember that there's only one chance so let's make it count!

TEN practices, FOUR weeks, ONE nycb!

One thing I've realised so far this year, is how the atmosphere can be so infectious sometimes, leading clouds to unwillingly drift into your mind. Let us be each other's sunshine AND MOTIVATE EACH OTHER TO WORK HARD OKAY. I really really reallyyyy think we need motivation for SIBF, find something to play your heart out for like how you will devote each of your round for 2.4 to someone to keep you going. :D Jiayou guys we have not much time left!

I know we weren't one section for Appassionata, but now we're together for SIBF. :D

Let's make history I LOVE YOU ALL!

P/S We can start by looking through the jazz exercises!

The house opens in exactly 24 hours. This time tomorrow a thousand pairs of eyes will be trained on one stage as we enter. It is a pretty scary thought, guys, but not so scary when you remember how many of them are there to support you, whether in the stands or on the stage.

We've all put in so much effort and invested so much of ourselves in this one night, I know we'll play a fantastic concert. Tomorrow, find the confidence to hold your hands steady and your head high. Remember the people behind you, your section, your old seniors, tutors and conductors. Play with the pride and passion of an NYCB member, and enjoy every minute of it.

The seniors are all behind you I'm sure :)) I really want you guys to do really well and wow all the audience! :D Must work hard okay :) You guys can do it! And try to not miss pracs from now on k! I'd try and go as much as possible too! (: As long as we all work together and we can get there soon!

2 weeks before concert is usually when we all get worried and stuff so that's when the magic starts coming in (: But the magic won't work if there isn't enough hard work put in place! So yep yep must jiayou and persevere till the end!

If you have any questions, surely you can ask Charlotte/Ms Ng (they wouldn't mind of course!) or even any of the Sec5s/6s/7s/8s/9s/10s (if you know who they are lol).

I have officially passed down. I am now talking to you as a non-band member... And not your SL anymore. So I can't call you my children/ducklings/whatever name I've invented over the year... :( Actually this whole think haven't really sunked in yet... =x I think I'll feel sadder next week when I go back to band and... Well. You guys will lead your ownselves D:

This is all so very sad... :( Like come on I'll miss all your random gibberish during warmups (whoops :P) and like random stuff here and there that are well... random!!! It's the small things that matter the most I guess...

I mean you guys won't hear me shout out "STAGE PROTOCOL!!!" anymore D:

Oh man.. But I really still feel I'm part of the section >< Hmm, once a percussionist, always a percussionist :D

Alright more serious stuff:

Must listen to Charlotte k! She's your new mummy :D Sec 3s also must help Charlotte! The juniors must listen to the big mummies! (not hard to do cuz joy and xichen are taller than you guys.. except for our miniscule SL HAHAHHAA KIDDING). Charlotte is big and imposing XD Charlotte you must be strict okay :) And torture the section >D I'm sure they won't mind :D

Ahhh I just realised ALOT of things I haven't said in your letters :( I'll write for farewell k! Even though I might not be there (I REALLY HOPE I'LL BE THERE), I'll find a way to give you the presents and letters etc! I'LL REALLY TRY TO BE THERE BUT THEN THIS IS ALL CONTROLLED BY MY MUMMY AND DADDDYYY DDDD: So yeah!

Omg blogger ate my post. No actually it's my stupidity cause I pressed something everything just deleted and look, autosaving draft, hence tadah!

Anyway this is the official 200th post of nycb percussion blog! <333

It's been such a looooooooooong time and a lot of things have changed since I first created this blog when I was a teeny sec 2! (i was never tiny, always fat, even as a baby but oh well that's beside the point).

Anyway we are passing down this Friday D: Actually, now I'm starting to feel very nervous and really really sad about leaving you guys all alone D: I'll make sure I come back once in a while, especially when the 2 Sec3s are away for gazillion weeks. But you guys would have to play the Mini FOA on your own D: But you guys will do just fine, as always! :D

Ahhh I'm seeing my little minions growing up D: Even Sheryl is taller than me now! Siew Rong too D: Children nowadays. Growthspurts so early. I doubt I'll have another one DD:

Okay seriously, I think our section blog is dead and wth nobody revived it D: Me, as a Sec 4, is too busy. So you lesser mortals should update! HAHA. Kidding :) I wanted to post the other day except blogger ate my post -.-

Anywayyyyyyy!

SYF IN JUST FIVE DAYS. HOOHAA. HOOHAAA. WE MUST BE HIGH.

Er, haha! Hmmm. I think everyone left band on Friday on high spirits! :D Like YAYYYY. Hahahahaha. MUST BE CONFIDENT YAA =DDD Cannot be nervous that day. Must keep nervousness to bare minimum.

Okay this is what I want my lovely section to do this week:

1. Sleep at 11 everyday. (See I'm reasonable. 11 is a reasonable hour.)
2. Sleep at 9 on 2nd April.
3. Ask teachers for homework extensions due to SYF pressure :)
4. Do homework punctually, still (after all grades matter)
5. Stop facebooking so much (heheh)
6. Get into zen everyday
7. Pray to whatever god/God you have THAT WE WILL GET THAT HONOURS!

Er, this is some performing protocol we still have yet to agree on:
1. Stand with your hands on the back
2. Stand straight
3. With feet apart, but not too wide like taiko drummers. reasonable.
4. Look at Ms C whenever you aren't playing
5. Still look at Ms C when you're playing
6. Do not talk on stage unless it's impt.... You never know if you're loud and annoying :)
7. Do not glare on fellow section mates if they make mistakes
8. Do not shake your head when you play something wrong
9. Do not stick out your tongue if you play something wrong
10. If you play something wrong JUST CONTINUE and don't let that affect you (mind you I think i might have missed my solo before)
11. Just look at Ms C, don't let the audience or judges affect you
12. ZEN ZEN ZEN. This is the time for kois.

Here are some stuff we still have to do before Friday:
1. buy duct tape (i think i buying today)
2. get fishing line
3. get the retarded instrument protocol thingy doneeee DDD= (okay that's my job. but still!!)
4. prac, LOOK AT MS CHONGGGGGGG. and of course get into the beat.. if look only then never think... that's bad.

Hmm... okay. Shall end here. From today onwards, I'll post the SYF results here... Just to keep you guys updated. If you wanna know bout the SYF stuff go to http://www.sgbandfusion.com becuase i go there and it's comprehensive. Like they'll give you the result and choice piece. So we can keep udated!!!

What a depressing week...

Hello, folks. Sorry I've been dead online for like, ages.

Anyways!

Yup, you guys are pretty much updated of the going-ons.

Oh there'll be additional parts for each of you (and me). Ms Ng wants everyone to play an extra part (something like a back-up) for both pieces. However, do bear in mind to practice your main parts before moving on to the next one. We also know that us percussionists have to face the unusual: auditions. So yeah, work hard. Please don't fail D: We know we lack people.

My internet is back up and I have dutifully scanned in the Neo's on 30th December. That's last year.

I cropped the individual shots out as well. And here they are.. It's the best I can do, so if it's not up to your standards, I included the entire thingthing here and you go crop it yourself.

As for the real originals, if you find that the resolution doesn't meet your expectations, you can go get it at the band room and find a better scanner. >( haha.. I'll put the originals in the band room TMR!!! If i rmb. which I should.

So the SYF set piece is out and parts are given! (i secretly think the set piece is funner to play than hymn hah hah!)

ANYWAY OK SERIOUSNESS.

1. Attendance

How many times have we talked about this, young ladies? Certain people which shall remain unnamed have been missing in action, including today with no reason. Hmm... Why is this so? When you're going to be late, or not coming at all, PLEASE TELL ME!! It would save me the trouble of wondering when you're going to show up. And anyway, you shouldn't be missing practices at all, unless you have a valid reason (like drama, sadly, ha.). But even when you have choral/drama, you should get back asap. Please consider the fact that our section is rather meeny now and we're always lacking womanpower of some sort, so please do show up whenever possible! And you better account for your absence to Yiying. Or else, it's truancy. -gasp-

2. HC concert

As we all know, we are considering combining with HC for the Noel concert. Well, anyway, whatever the outcome is, junior band or no junior band, you guys still have to play properly becuase it's a real concert! Yup. Must not take it easy, only because you think it's combined and not your concert blah blah which isn't actually true because you're in it so you have to give your best.

3. SYF

As we all know too, a certain piece has been sort of named as our syf piece. Do practice that piece well. Today was rather, well. Awful. This Thursday there'll be intense training on this particular piece during sectionals so if you don't want to suck, come on Thurs! Or well, you can go prac yourself. Figure out your notes and rhythms and stuff and as we all know, we don't have that much time.

Ok I've been naggy enough. Hee so naggy D: Oh well. Later, people!

Hello it's me again just giving you some band-ly updates.

Firstly, and rather importantly (heheh -sniggers-), I'll be off to Shanghai for three weeks from 1 Nov to 21 Nov. So practically, there'll be no erm, me! Haha. I think there'll be a break during one of the weeks (cause almost everybody will be away), so that one shouldn't be a problem. Will let you know again. Anyway, cause I'll get back one week later than most people, so yeah there'll be band and there'll be no me. So sec twos will be in charge!

When sight-reading, try to cover everything. Drumkit parts, ah please, someone go and grab it! Don't be shy shy just try. If got snare part, or timpani, or whatever, still MUST play. If playing so-called 'confirmed' pieces (aka those that I give out parts alr) then play your own parts. If you're free then you try cover my part too. It'll be best if you can try and cover everything, at least the more impt parts cause yes they're important! Must not slack off during sectionals. I think Ms Ng will still come but when there's sectionals without instructor work on your techniques (cause you detoriated DDDD:) and especially sec ones, need to know how to roll already, and all the basic rudiments. Please please please sticking, fix it once and for all! And must know how to crash!!!! There'll be SYF next year with high possibilities of complicated crash parts so must know!! Suspended and everything also!! MUST MUST MUST!!!! Time to buck up already. Sec twos gonna be sec threes, must be even PROER!! Sec ones gonna be sec twos gonna get juniors so must be PRO enough!

Secondly, erm. Well. What ah. I forgot .__. Erm there isn't anything else so far. Well there's this HC band rumour thing (cough) but shall confirm later on.

Yup so basically please get back your old standards! And don't slack off when I'm away. Yup I believe you guys won't :) So guai! Hahaha. Oh, must take care of scores too. Don't lose any. Oh yes, take care of instruments please! Especially the well, practically deceased vibes mallets. They're dying!! And yup. Oh ya return tuners after use back to the cupboard. Oh oh don't forget to return the files after practices. And pack everything and release the timpani pedal!!! Important important!

Anyway, Ms Chong mentioned we may use Hymn for SYF. So well, erm I'll go and distribute parts and when I'm done with that can start practising properly. And I mean it properly! If unsure of anything, try ask me before I leave so you can practise good-ly even when I'm gone. Or any other senior really. Lorraine might still be around, I have no idea.

Yup, and oh yes. One more thing. During the hols later on, do not be late for lunch. As in, you go for lunch, and come back as soon as possible. Do not come late. Yup I think our section is actually ok in this aspect but yep, just as reminder. Someone has to keep watching the time.

OH YES I REMEMBER.

MARCHING!

I'm sorry to say, but we have to march. No choice. Yup. It's part of SYF, and this time round must play and march at the same time. So yes, please start. Erm. Haha practising marching? Lol. Erm. Be more serious in marching cause it's a serious thing! It matters! And try not to complain. I know it is tiring and stuff and I'll try to be considerate when doing section marching but it's best for you guys just to give your best shot during drills and faster get it over and done with! Do not regard marching as something stupid because it's actually an SYF thing, which is rather important.

Yeah actually there's some variations for sec ones.. But I think Lorraine the Sacred Leader wants all the sec ones to come for every single prac. Yep I heard her said that. So yeah... No exceptions for sec ones :) If I'm wrong, correct me.

Oh yeah they mentioned something about marching.. Which means wear something PE-ish. Like. PE shirt. Or band shirt. Unless you want to march in hongzi well that's your own... Er decision. Main band also have to march -.- Haha.

1) Scores

Anyone who needs extra scores need to inform my latest by MONDAY PRAC. Then I'll go zap the scores on Tuesday. Later than Monday, you have to go and zap yourself. Make sure you have enough scores okay. You don't want to panic during the concert next Saturday.

2) Instruments

If you need to borrow instruments from the CO, tell me asap too cause I need to tell Mr Lim and he still have to tell the CO teacher and bla bla. And make sure that you really really really have to borrow the instru. Inform me asap, by Monday prac also.

The section photo is nice!!!! Very nice!!! Although the added lightsabers are kind of extra...I'm not sure whether there is any obvious links between Percussion and Starwars.

whee i haven't posted in ages.. Has it been ages? I have no idea XD Shall post anyway.

Eh sec ones why you guys don't want post :( Actually I think no one visits this blog anyway ._. Only the four loyal visitors.. Sigh.. But still someone has to keep the blog alive D: Yeah yeah so I suggest the sec ones post x) Heheh.

Joy, Beishi and I packed the table today! See even other people from other section also help!Oh well still got next time for you section people.. So next time Joy and I can slack x) Teehee. Anyway it's packed. So...

Anybody who messes the table up is gonna be in grave danger. Almost as fatal as hiding Mas Selamat in your house.
And that includes SL and ASL. Mmhmm. Cause those two people are usually the ones who mess everything up. :) Wait actually not really. Sometimes I mess it up myself ._. BUT OTHER PEOPLE ALSO MESS UP! So yeah.. Just a kind reminder, people.. It's not very easy packing up a messy table ya know. And apprently even though everybody messes up the table, it's the librarian job to clean it. Tsk. But usually people help heheh.

Anyway we didn't polish the crash and the cymbals and the glock today cause cough we didn't feel like >< Such laborious work x) And the rust cream wasn't even there anyway..

Tmr got audi prac right D: Zomg that means must move instrus during lunch :( Boohooo. I haven't moved instrus for such a long time. Maybe since last concert x) Heheh. I like the band room arrangement now. We don't have to pack the instrus x) Heheh. Can just go there and play. Which is nice! :D

Anyway Joy and I thought that we need new files... Cause the MNOP file is like bulging. And other files are also dying. I'm thinking of like ring file... Must get those good kinds. If not they'd just die within a short period of time. Ring files then we put sheet protectors... So one band piece one protector.. Hm hm... I dunno. SL, idea approved? But then we'd need ka-ching again. Ahhh everything also need money :(

Hello!

This is the section photo that we're using. It's currently being edited my Valentia cuz my com is under repair! :O :(

This Thursday.. I think the instructor not coming. yes.. Sec 1s will have to work on their sticking. Snail aka Patricia was like "Sticking!" oh man. I haven't heard that in like... ages. :( boo... i wish that they didn't pass down.. kinda miss them all.. :(

Will y'all miss me?? :( you can get me a nice nice present like a drumset XD haha :) joy can learn how to hug properly. :) teehee

Join band in HC!! cuz I'm going to. yes.. that's directed mostly at you, Valentia! heheh. then the noob people will join. then we'll be proer XD blahaha.

Oh yes. Xichen. You don't have to play the bongos for the yellow bird anymore. Subject to changes. yeah. but should be finalised by Thursday. yeah?

And I'm arranging another section outing! YAY! It's to the HCJC band concert. yeah but we have like outing before that. so the schedule will be like this.

Dinner then Concert. unless someone suggests to do something in the afternoon. oh wait. but we might have like band.. :O yeah.. holiday prac. i think. cuz it' before japan trip. yeah. so only dinner might be possible. yes.

That day is 30 May, Friday!! It's a sch. holiday but have CCA still.. so don't go anywhere. and if your friends ask you out, you already have a previous arrangement. THE HC CONCERT! yes.

Hello once again!

Anyway anyway. Hui Juan came back today and she demands a section outing x) So I was thinking of going my house on 1st May :D That's labour day.. Everybody should be free. But this idea should be vetted by the SL and ASL first :D My house got barbecue (eh i think must book so must plan early) and a meeny swimming pool. and an eighth of a basketball court. Heheh. And Wii! With super smash brothers BRAWL and other awesome games x) Only two controllers though heheh. Can buy your own x)

Whee so that's a suggestion :D

Yo all!!

I've come here to say that I wanna play techno... XD haha.. Lol.. and since majority of the perc ppl want to play it, we're gonna play it.. But it's solely for fun.. tsk.. since Ms. Chong doesn't like that song cuz she think it's overplayed. I don't think we can play it in Japan since well.. Ms. Chong is gonna be there.

Sad to say though... you're not gonna get to choose what you want to play.. hah! but you can ask nicely and your request will be taken into consideration.. CONSIDERATION only.. =) consideration = will be thought over.. not confirmed..

Still dunno what I want to play..... Sec 1s who haven't heard it can erm.. borrow CD!! yeah.. or ask valentia to sing it for you... x) teehee.

We also have to decide on the next section outing.. heheh. better start booking people before they're not available.. Hmmm... how's after block test.. like somewhere in April. Are there any random days off in April??

Attire -- whatever you want.. for sec1s must wear Sch. Uniform cuz u have workshop after that.

What to bring -- MONEY!!

12 PM to 1PM = Eat lunch

Yeah then after that you can go wherever you want.

Sticks

Hello perc dudes..

I'm here to tell y'all about the different sticks..

Well there are mainly 2 types that there are. The concert snare and then there's the drumset sticks. Nylon tips are mainly used for drumset cuz u get a nice "ting ting" sound on the ride cymbals. So we generally say that nylon tips are used for "cymbal work". The other reason for choosing nylon tips is that it's sturdy and can last long, unlike the wooden tips which will eventually wear down and splinter and chip away. (that's what happened to yours Joy)

Usually for heavy metal music or a marching band, it's encouraged to get thicker sticks the size of 5B to withstand the impact. But you juniors do realise that your seniors mostly use drumset sticks. Drumset sticks are either a 7A(thinnest) that's my TAMA size!! or 5A(standard) which is my Vater size. So if you want to try it out, can ask me.. I also have a 5B sticks, TAMA nylon tips. It's commonly said that if you play many different styles of music, you should get 5B. The size of the drumstick also affect the sound they produce. not just quality-wise, but also the volume. Thicker sticks (much like Valentia's general orchestra sticks) will give you a louder sound while thinner sticks give u a softer sound.

There are also different types of wood used to make your sticks. The main ones are, maple, hickory and oak.. Honestly, I've never seen maple before. But it's lighter than hickory and oak which means that they're more vulernable to snapping. And those of you who've seen my old tamas know that hickory snaps as well, which means that maple sticks probably snap faster. Oak is heavier and sturdier, you know for violent people. But on the whole, both hickory and oak are accepted as sturdy material and able to hold up rigourous drumming. My tama sticks took about 1 year plus before they snapped.

MOST importantly, the drumsticks must feel good.. As in, you must like how it feels in your hand.. you don't just buy it cuz it's beautiful looking. x) and before you buy you're sticks, remember to test them out on a flat surface, usually a test pad. Just roll and make sure they don't wobble. If they wobble, means that the stick is warped. So don't buy that pair, choose another one from the shelf and test it. Warped means that the stick is not straight, you know, curved.

There's another thing about drumsticks, whether they're varnished or laquered. Don't really know about this, but it should concern those with sweaty palms... Hmmm and I know this applies to alot of you.. (Janabel, Valentia... and I know you have them too Rae..)... i think it's cuz u're nervous.. if you just relax, you won't have sweaty palms.. I used to have'em in sec1 or 2 i think.. I think it's the nerve problems. Keep COOL!!! XD like me =DDDDD hahaa...

Oh.. The Japanese Concert thingy is on the 29 March (Saturday), it's 7.30 pm at the Esplanade. Tickets are $12. and that's already student priced. So far, those who are going in the section are.. ME, Janabel, Xinyi, Valentia and Sheryl. XD yes... way to go Sheryl for your active participation..

Ok so we decided tentaively it would be on Monday, 10 March 2008. Time should be around lunch. We're eating lunch first before buying sticks (walking to Swee Lee needs energy ya know x)). Then go Swee Lee buy sticks. After that it's free and easy. Unless you want to take neos.

Renowned percussionist Gifford Howarth visits the Conservatory for a five day residency and presents a marimba masterclass.

Gifford Howarth received his Bachelors of Music degree from Ithaca College and his Masters in Percussion Performance from Kent State University. His percussion studies include working with Gordon Stout, Ted Rounds, and Bill Molenhof.

He is currently an Adjunct Professor/Artist in Residence at Penn State University in State College, PA along with being on the percussion faculty at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Mr. Howarth is a very active recitalist, clinician, and masterclass teacher focusing on mallet percussion. He is a National Yamaha Performing Artist, a clinician for the Zildjian Cymbal Company, and a member of the Vic Firth Education Team.

Like the people teach you something then you play on practice pad or something. I think this dude is gonna play and show off his skills then he teach you how to? But you won't get to try.
